Black Dimensions: History, Science, Literature, Spirit

Join us for the launch of Bertrand Bickersteth’s Numinous Animal: Tracing the Afrofuturism of Black Cowboys (AU Press, 2026). This book explores the eclipsed history of Black cowboys on the Prairies. Through the creation of a font based on the cattle brands of these cowboys, Bickersteth recovers an untold part of Black history in Alberta and considers the overlooked dimensionalities of blackness.

Joining him on stage will be Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike, Samantha Jones, and Wakefield Brewster, three incredible writers whose work exemplifies the dimensions of science, literature, and spirit. Moderated by Sue-Shane Tsomondo.
